In Time for Sandy: LOCAL CIVIC ASSOCATION BUILDS RAIN GARDEN IN RADNOR COMMUNITY PARK

Rosemont, PA – On Saturday, October 27, the Garrett Hill Coalition and its project partners constructed a rain garden at Clem Macrone Park in Radnor Township. Support for the project comes from the PA Department of Environment Protection through the League of Women Voters of PA, Water Resources Education Network.
Colin McCrossan of Bryn Mawr led Bryn Mawr Scout Troop 19 in building the garden as part of his Eagle Scout project. John Nystedt of the Delaware River keeper Network provided design help and hands on instruction. Garrett Hill Coalition leaders Paul Overbeck and Sara Pilling organized the project and provided support throughout the day.
The rain garden will slow the runoff from rain and snow storms and will clean the salt and other pollutants that drain from the Macrone parking lot. The garden will help protect the small stream that runs through the Park, Valley Run, a tributary to Darby Creek.
Project workers installed the rain garden, knowing that hurricane Sandy was headed our way the next day. The garden managed the excess storm water from Sandy without damage to the structure or plants. Requiring minimal maintenance, the garden will become a beautiful and effective feature of the park.
When complete, the project will include signs that explain how the rain garden works. The rain garden is a permanent installation and enhancement to Macrone Park and Radnor Township.
