AIS Spanish Class Gets Cooking

The class made Spanish specialties at Wayne Art Center's kitchen.

Agnes Irwin’s 12th-grade Spanish class had a fiesta at the Wayne Art Center on October 12. Culinary instructor Emma Fogt, RD, MBA led the girls through a hands-on cooking class of Spanish specialties. When they were finished in the cocina, the class sat down at the art center’s beautiful wrought-iron tables to enjoy their delicious lesson.

The menu included fresh creamy guacamole, tomato bread and Spanish potato tortillas, which the girls had to flip hot off the pan. Lunch was topped off with steamy Spanish hot chocolate, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a meringue.

“Cooking is an invaluable skill which students can use for the rest of their lives. It allows them to be able to prepare and consume fresh foods, builds confidence and overall supports a healthier diet for a lifetime,” said Fogt, a registered dietitian with an expertise in child and family health.

Spanish teacher Adriana Fink was very pleased with the class and is hoping to make it a regular part of her curriculum. “Getting out of the classroom for experiences like this really enhances the girls’ knowledge of the culture. Emma made it so easy and fun.”
