Deer Cull On In Radnor

The current deer density in the township is 101 per square mile.

The Radnor Board of Commissioners on Monday unanimously passed a resolution to permit the culling of deer in the township, reports Main Line Media News.

According to the newspaper article, the resolution calls for a three-pronged approach to controlling the deer:

  • The township will enter into a contract with the US Department of Agriculture to hire sharpshooters for 10 nights of deer-culling at a cost not to exceed $50,000.
  • Allow legal and permitted hunting on private lands during hunting season in Pennsylvania.
  • Educate landowners on minimizing human conflict with deer.

Nearby, Valley Forge National Historical Park has been using sharpshooters and euthanasia to help reduce the deer population there part of a larger deer management plan and environmental impact statement.

A team of marksmen armed with special non-lead ammunition and working under tightly controlled conditions shot and killed 377 white tailed deer in Valley Forge National Historical Park.

  • What do you think of Radnor's approach to the deer population?

we're paying fifty grand to kill deer? excuse me to cull deer? I can make a phone call and we can get hunters here to do it for the meat... paying fifty grand to do something that we can get done happily for nothing? We've lost our minds over here...

I agree with the concept, I also agree with the above statement.
There are plenty of hunters who would be happy to do it for nothing and keep the meat.
Apparently they got rid of the family of deer that lived about 200 yards from my home and for the first year in about ten years, I actually have thriving plants

My understanding is that TE brings in an association of bow hunters to 'cull' the deer in TE....no charge and nobody has been hurt. Anyone that knows more about this program please explain further.....particularly to our Commissioners who still love to spend our money on things that could be done for free.....amazing.

Tredyffrin Township has been allowing bow hunting of deer in our township parks for a few years. This is a free service that we arrange with two private hunting clubs.

We also put private residents in touch with these clubs if they want their properties hunted.

Estimated numbers for Radnor are 100-110 deer for $50K. Last year in our parks we harvested 83 deer for $0.

More information is on our website: http://www.tredyffrin.org/police/animal/deer.aspx

For $50K there isn't a better solution than to destroy an animal? <Linda Spreeman, King of Prussia>

why not just allow hunters to do it? make the seasons longer and allow hunters in to do it for free.
