Heat Index to Reach 110 as Heat Wave Continues

The fifth heat wave of the summer continues to swelter the area with high temperatures and humidity and there isn’t much relief in sight.

This most recent heat wave began in the Midwest and lingered there for days before heading East. According to the National Weather Service, 13 deaths in the Midwest are possibly heat related.

The Midwest is just now starting to see some relief. But their relief is our problem as the triple-digit temperatures hit the Mid-Atlantic corridor.

The 100-degree temperatures are expected to stick around through Saturday and only slightly cooler temperatures of 90 degrees are expected until Monday, according to the NWS.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are expected to be mostly sunny and Friday night there is a possibility of isolated thunderstorms, according to the NWS.

The heat index (which means what it actually feels like outside) for the greater Media area is expected to be 105 on Thursday and a whopping 110 on Friday, according to the NWS.

An excessive heat warning is in affect for the area from now until 8 p.m. Friday, according to the NWS. An excessive heat warning means a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures combined with high humidity which can cause a dangerous situation and heat illness is likely.

Conditions at night will also remain hot and humid especially in more urbanized areas, according to the NWS.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and in air-conditioned areas, and dress in light-colored, loose clothing. Remember to be mindful of pets, infants and older neighbors and relatives.
