St. Davids Post Office Closing Friday

Post office boxes will be moved to the Wayne Post Office.

Friday, November 18 will be the last day of business for the St. Davids post office, which has survived multiple moves over multiple decades but did not survive the United States Postal Service's reduction plan.

It's "very sad" said local resident and longtime user Arthur O'Neill.

St. Davids resident Ted Pollard has also been using the branch for decades three or four times a week. Pollard said going to the Wayne Post Office will add congestion to the downtown.

And then there's the parking. Multiple people in a span of a few minutes in the post office branch Thursday lamented going to the Wayne post office because of a lack of free and readily available parking.

So what will people do?

"I'll go to the Wayne Post Office and stand in long lines," Pollard said.

A sign indicating that the St. Davids branch would close appeared about three weeks ago. The building that houses it, a former home, is owned by Bryn Mawr Trust Co.

It seems excessive that we have Post Offices so close to each other: Wayne, St. Davids and Villanova. They have no evening hours and limited Saturday hours, makng it difficult for many to access, especially if trying to go on a lunch break with many others. Probable Saturday closings and service cuts will make it worse. Given the parking challenges, St. Davids should have been the one to remain open, ideally with evening hours.

That's a great picture of Pat. He's had to be flexible with the move to where he is and it looks as though we must be, too.

I use whatever p.o. I'm near. If in Wayne, I go there. My office is in Paoli so sometimes I go there. I live in B.M. so sometimes there or to Villanova. But, happily, we receive mail at our homes. When we lived in Valley Forge there was no home delivery and to get daily mail we had no choice but to go to the post office.

Agree. For those of us who need to drive over for quick postal services, this is the only place that makes sense. Villanova and Wayne are both parking nightmares for retail customers. Yet another example of the heavy hand of "one size fits all" coming out of Washington!

For those who knew the St David's Post Office, this is a very sad day. Maybe the government decision makers will come to the Wayne Post Office and solve the parking problem, solve the poorly relocated drop-box problem, utilize all four postal stations to help with the lines. Even so, they can never replace what was St David's!

This is a true loss! Yes, it is convenient to have a post office in St. Davids..but, in addition..part of the treasure is the two gentlemen who have staffed the Radnor/St. Davids Offices over the years. Knowing the government, I know we won't be able to change this.... we certainly will miss having this convenience. Helen McE. Gleason

I'll miss seeing Pat and Lee in my neighborhood most. The St. Davids Post Office has been a treasure to South Wayne not only for it's convenience and charm, but because of the two amazing employees who know what "service" means. Hopefully they will infuse a bit of that into the Wayne Post Office.

To all those who are saddened by the closure, I say, TAKE HEART! The functionaries upstream in the postal system attempted to thwart the move to the current location when they lost the lease on Radnor-Chester Road. But as we saw, steady public pressure (and influence by one particularly well-placed person) forced them to reverse course. We can make it happen again!

This matter has been brought to the attention of senior staffers in the offices of Rep. Pat Meehan and Sen. Pat Toomey. I absolutely believe that sustained public support (in the form of phone calls and letters) can produce the appropriate outcome.

The facts are on our side, but you must make your voice heard. Doing nothing serves only to reward those who pushed for this indefensible closure.

I am willing to suffer some inconvenience if the aim is to reduce operating cost. We ALL have do our share with respect to the current economic conditions. A planned approach to cost reductions where staff reductions are achieved through attrition rather than lay-offs of personnel is preferred. My fear and concern is that those in decision making positions do not or will not take a unified apparoach to cost reductions. I am sure that most government budgets can be reduced 20% or more without causing pain and suffering to the general public. I do not view having to go to an alternate location for my postal needs as pain and suffering rather a minor inconvenience. We all need to start "rowing in the same direction" if want to affect economic improvement! Two (2) post offices within a mile seems excessive. It never made sense to me to have an office in St. Davids and less sense when they moved it closer to the Wayne PO.

The Radnor-St. Davids post office was a consistent money-maker. In reducing "operating costs," the closure actually reduced profits. If one of the three had to close, it should have been Villanova, which is a nightmare to use.

Moving here in 1995, I have had the pleasure of dealing with the "DREAM TEAM". Frank,Lee(The Reverend Barksdale) and Pat . They have been great. I consider them friends.
My prior P.O. Box expereince in Atlanta and Memphis was awful. They appeared to hate their jobs..and it showed in their actions....But not the "Dream Team". Say your prayers for our friend Lee.
When Pat and Lee were held captive in Wayne, they parked on the street. I would drive by an put quarters in their meters..so when they walked out to place more coins??????What is going on?? I confess.
When my young son was 3yrs old and got a new toy..he had to stop by the Post Office to show everyone.....of course they would make a Big Deal out of it..and he would smile.
Like everyone else I am sick about the move. I use a handicaped sticker..good look at Wayne. One time at Wayne I fell out of my car..not good.
As before we will see Pat at Wayne in some sort of capacity (letters to Santa).
Sorry Lee won't be there. I accused him in the past of hiding the Harry & David catlogues in the ceiling...until the ceiling fell down one Saturday morning.
I will keep up my protest (use my cane) to get things as they should be.

PS: Remember the Postal Service gets NO $$$$ from our taxes and also has to turn over funds over to the govt......then is expected to run like a business.

Press On!

I've heard something interesting. Wayne post office might be closing too b/c of the ownership of some of their facilities by radnor township and they may be opening a joint post office with Randor, Willistown, Newtown and Tredyfin/Easttown to save money.

IF that's the case, then keep the St Davids post office there, expand it and use it. It's in the middle of radnor/.
