Barefoot Designer's Decorating Tips

  • Does your front door open directly into your living room? Try floating your furniture in front of it, allowing for enough space to open and close the door with ease. You've now created a cozy seating area right in your entryway.
  • Is there are wall of windows in your bedroom? Instead of facing the bed toward the window, try using the windows as a backdrop for it. You can do this by hanging floor skimming curtains on either end of the windows which will frame your bed during the day and make you feel enveloped at night.
  • Not sure how far away your tv should be from your furniture? The general rule of thumb is two and a half times the size of your screen. If your screen is 42", your tv should be 105" away from your furniture.
  • Purchase a chest for hard working storage. It will serve as a beautiful accent piece and can move from room to room - store blankets in the living room, documents in your home office or toys in a kid's room.
  • Have a by window in your living or family room? Take advantage of it by placing your sofa in front and a narrow sofa table between the bay and the back of the sofa. This will provide a great place to displace your favorite accent pieces.
  • Want to determine what your decorating style is? Look to your clothing choices. Are they timeless? Then you most likely will have traditional style. Are they trendy, streamlined and sophisticated? You are probably contemporary in style. Do your clothes mix both traditional and modern elements? Style-wise, you'd lean to the transitional. Last, if you tend to wear "everyday" clothes, like jeans and comfy sweaters, the casual style suits you best.
