Please join Radnor Memorial Library and Radnor Historical Society on Tuesday, January 10, 7:30pm for an evening with the co-founding editor of Ploughshares literary magazine http://www.pshares.org/ and well-known author, DeWitt Henry. Henry is the author of the memoir, Sweet Dreams: A Family History (Hidden River Press, 2011).
Sweet Dreams chronicles the early years of the author's life, growing up in post-war Wayne. The book has been described by Richard Hoffman as "a remarkable feat of memory delivered in extraordinary prose." The NYJournal of Books calls DeWitt Henry, a Harvard graduate and Emerson College professor, a "writer's writer."
I read some interviews with the author online, and learned that part of Valley Forge Military Academy grounds, together with its neighbor the St. David's Golf Club, was originally Henry's great-grandfather's dairy farm. When Wayne was founded in 1880, he had been the milkman.
Local resident Chris Mills is enjoying reading Sweet Dreams right now and we shared a bit of it last week, when I told him that I knew about the dairy farm. Chris is married to author Libby Mosier-Mills and they are friends with Henry and really looking forward to the book talk. I am hoping to see author Beth Kephart here next week, as I follow Beth's blog and know she is a fan of DeWitt's as well.
And as you may expect, DeWitt told me how excited he is about coming home to Wayne and seeing everyone.
Henry's book is a complicated memoir of a boy's passage into adulthood in a family of privilege, torn by dark secrets. Books will be available at the event. Refreshments will be served.
