The Marple Public Library and the Library Foundation of Delaware County are pleased to announce that the Marple Public Library will be offering free, family-oriented money management lessons. This is an innovative new program developed for Pennsylvania’s community-based organizations and libraries. It is open to all Delaware County residents.
“Right on the Money” is a program that uses fun, age-appropriate children’s books to introduce kids to key financial concepts. It also provides parents with tools to reinforce their own financial knowledge as well as help their children build sound money management skills.
“Nearly 75 percent of parents feel they are unprepared to teach their kids about basic personal finances,” said Director of the Delaware County Library System David Belanger. “This program helps parents strengthen their financial skills. It also gives them creative ideas and helps them feel more comfortable teaching positive money management skills to their children. And, frankly, it’s a lot of fun!”
“Right on the Money” was developed through a partnership between the Penn State Cooperative Extension, the Heinz Endowments and the Pennsylvania Office of Financial education. It is an easy-to-use curriculum for teachers, librarians, and other community members who are interested in providing financial education to children ages 5-7 and their parents.
The four-part program (which includes a light dinner) will begin Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Marple Public Library located on 2599 Sproul Road, Broomall 19008. To register please call the Marple Public Library at 610-356-1510 or register online at www.delcolibraries.org under library events. For more information please call Susan Purcell at 610-891-8622.
For details on these programs and others, visit the DCLS MoneySmart website at www.delcolibraries.org/money. The Delaware County Library System is a department of County Government responsible for providing support services for 26 independent member libraries. The Library Foundation of Delaware County is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supplements library funding. Donations can be made at www.supportdelcolibraries.org.

I love seeing new programs like this cropping up--not all parents have the time or resources to spend a lot of time on financial literacy at home, so these programs are important. Still, with sites like http://www.bankaroo.com available, I think parents can at least make an effort to teach the basics--let programs like this solidify rather than introduce. :) I know lots of parents feel unqualified to teach, but the information is out there, and parents are capable of learning the same way their kids are.

Wanda,
Our program goes into much more detail than the site you recommended. It will also specifically teach parents how to talk about money. And the information given is non-biased.
