Ted Coyle, a resident of Chandler Lane in Villanova, said he does not like to complain, but that he found when lives were at risk there was not good communication and enough help. On Monday evening a tree on his road fell on wires and caught fire. Coyle and other neighbors called PECO, but he said it was not until the following afternoon that a PECO crew came to the scene. There, a PECO employee told him that the number of people in an outage that call contributes to the priority of the service. Coyle said they now randomly lose power three or four times a month. “The problem is, what the …
As of 7 a.m. on Thursday, 1,656 PECO customers in Radnor Township were still without power in their homes and businesses. That’s a small amount of people compared to the 850,000 PECO customers impacted during Hurricane Sandy. But the temperatures are cooling; how are Radnor Township’s “powerless” coping? Either you can handle it or you can't Villanova resident Nelson Dayton is in a unique but not-too-hopeful situation. A resident of Aldwyn Lane, Dayton said they often lose power when giant trees on South Ithan Avenue fall during storms. But this time, after one of those trees fell on Monday, …
Hurricane Sandy was — and continues to be — tragic for many. But some people are finding ways to positively go through it. Hurricane Cocktail Hours in Newtown Square From an anonymous resident: Monday night we gathered a bunch of neighbors together at a house with a generator and feasted and drank our nervousness away. That night at 11:00 pm, just as we were tucking our kids in for the stormy night, the power went out, as we expected.  The first night without power was fun although it was late and we were more concerned about the blowing trees around us. The second night was fun, we told …
While most people were starting to get back to their normal lives on Wednesday, about 3,000 Radnor homes were still without power. In downtown Wayne the main traffic signal was run by a generator, and half of the businesses on North Wayne Avenue were dark, showing that although Hurricane Sandy is gone, her wake remains. A resident of Chandler Lane in the Villanova section of Radnor Township told Radnor Patch that many there are unhappy with the post-Sandy response. "When Irene hit we had a live wire active for over a week with no response from either the township or PECO. All the fire …
Last year I spent the night that Hurricane Irene raged bailing out my sump pump after losing power very early in the storm. After that we said we would get a generator for the next time. Fast forward to last Thursday. In that year we never bought a generator and found ourselves luckily snagging the last one at Costco. And on Monday we snagged the last water-powered sump pump back-up. Obviously I did not learn my lesson during Irene. So now, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, may be the best time for you to make sure you are prepared for the next time so you are not frantically searching for …

Local professional organizer Darla DeMorrow wrote an entry on her blog about how to get rid of water in your basement. She writes: Many families today might be dealing with water in their basement. My heart goes out to you. We got just a trickle this time, but a few years ago we had two solid inches of water throughout our basement. Here’s what to do if that is your situation today. If you are lucky enough to have a sump pump, working electric, and just a little bit of water in an otherwise dry basement, then use a broom or mop to chase the water over to your sump pump so it can leave your …

With Hurricane Sandy is here with rain, wind and the threat of losing power.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But, the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours if full (24 hours of half full), the USDA says…

Radnor Fire Company’s chief Mike Maguire said that while they will have the firehouse manned throughout the storm, there are things homeowners can do. Be careful if you have lit candles. During Hurricane Irene in August 2011, most of the calls were water rescues. If you can’t see the painted lines on a road because of water don’t drive through it. The fire company gets service calls for water in basements. They will not pump out basements, but do recommend if you can isolate power to the basement to turn off the breakers. If you know it will flood, isolate outlets or appliances, especially …
