Gen Butler Detachment Presents Gung Ho Award to Villanova Midshipman

The Marines of the Newtown Square based General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League were present for the Villanova University Naval Reserve Officer Training Course’s Annual Spring Review.  During the program, Butler Detachment Past Commandant Earle E. Drake had the honor to present Midshipman 1/C Andrew de Lannoy the Detachment’s Gung Ho Award.  This Award is presented every year at this time to the outstanding Midshipman under a Marine Corps contract which means the Midshipman has committed to serve as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

After opening remarks given by Midshipman 1/C John Q. Dickman, Spring 2014 NROTC Battalion Commander, the Program continued with a brief speech given by guest of honor, Rear Admiral Thomas J. Kearney, USN.   Admiral Kearney is a graduate of Villanova and the NROTC program.  Admiral Kearney encouraged the Midshipmen to live up to the standards of a Naval Officer while promoting the values of America.  His two secrets of success were to attend class while at Villanova and to do your homework.
