A Japanese House in Wayne

This style of house was called the "Japanese House" by its developers.

Today we continue our series of highlights from the George W. Schultz photo album. Schultz documented many scenes of early Wayne and St. Davids.

This style of house was called the "Japanese House" by its developers, a somewhat odd title for a rather simple house. Many architects were influenced by the presence of Japanese arts and crafts at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, which spurred a new interest in Japanese culture and design. The naming of this house is undoubtedly a result of that influence. However, it shares most of its details with other Shingle style homes designed by the Price Brothers for North Wayne. Perhaps the curving slope of its roof is what made it "Japanese" in appearance in the eyes of the architects.
