It may soon be illegal to smoke anywhere on the boardwalk in Ocean City.

The current ordinance restricts smoking to designated areas, but Ocean City Council will consider on first reading an ordinance banning smoking anywhere on the boardwalk, including the ramps and stairs leading to the boardwalk.

The proposed penalty for smoking in these areas is $100-$250 for the first offense and $500-$1,000 for any subsequent offense.

The matter will be considered when council convenes at the municipal complex at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

The area of the ordinance prohibiting smoking in parks and recreational areas would be amended to include the boardwalk, according to the agenda packet posted on the city’s website.

Smoking is already prohibited at the city’s indoor facilities, including the Ocean City Music Pier and Ocean City Sports and Civic Center.

Legislation to completely ban smoking on N.J. beaches is still being considered.

What do you think about a boardwalk smoking ban?

They ought to work on enforcement of getting the bicycles OFF of the boardwalk at 10 A.M. (as is posted) before they decide to pass another ordinance. Ocean City does a lousy job with the bicycle rule as it is now!

No, this is an infringement on rights.

Nothing good comes from smoking for anybody. Except tobacco executives and farmers. Those little white and orange foam butts are so dirty and never decompose, I'm all for extreme nazi smoking laws, it's better for everybody, might even push some people to quit since it's such a hassle to smoke anymore.

We're criminalizing tobacco smoking, while decriminalizing pot smoking. This country has lost it's mind. and for the record, I don't smoke either.

If it's so terrible, why don't the states just ban smoking altogether. But of course they wouldn't do that because what would they do without all that money they collect from taxes that they keep adding on to cigarette sales when they can't balance their budgets. Oh, but let's legalize marijuana.
