SEPTA Considers Double-Decker Trains

The transit authority thinks adding the double-decker cars could solve some of its capacity woes.

SEPTA may add double-decker train cars to its line-up.

The transit authority thinks adding the double-decker cars could solve some of its capacity woes, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Regional rail ridership has increased by 50 percent over the past 15 years, the Inquirer said.

One obvious concern: Will extra-tall trains fit on SEPTA's current lines? The Inquirer says SEPTA is undertaking a clearance study to see if the double-decker cars would fit.

The cars would cost more than the traditional cars currently found on SEPTA's lines -- up to $3 million, compared with about $2.3 million for the current cars, the Inquirer said.
