The Waynewood Under Construction

This image is the only known image to capture the Waynewood in the middle of construction.

One of the best known and prolific architects to have called Radnor home was David Knickerbacker Boyd. Over the next few weeks "From the Archives" will look at some of Boyd's work in the township.

The Waynewood, today's Wayne Hotel, was not David K. Boyd's first large building for downtown Wayne, but it might be his most recognizable. The large Tudor Revival style building, which may have began as an apartment building rather than a hotel, was built from 1906-1907 by Jonathan D. Lengel, a frequent Boyd collaborator.

This rare image, a tiny snapshot from a photo album in the collection of the Radnor Historical Society, is the only known image to capture the Waynewood in the middle of construction. Though it was used for various purposes over the years, including a home for senior citizens and, briefly, a synagogue, the Wayne Hotel was re-opened in 1985 after a complete restoration. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places two years later.
