The Artist of the Month for December at Main Line Unitarian Church is Deborah Leavy, a Yale-trained lawyer who gave it all up for painting. Her legal career included stints in a large law firm, as a Capitol Hill staffer in Washington, DC, and as executive director of the ACLU of PA. Since she started painting fifteen years ago, she has studied at the Main Line Art Center, Wayne Art Center, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts.
Deborah's solo show, awarded to her by the Philadelphia/Tri State Artists Equity, will be in the Fireside Gallery at MLUC from December 1 through January 8, 2012. The Artist's Reception is Sunday, December 4, from 2:00–4:00 p.m.

"My show is called Beneath the Surface, because for most of my life people have known me not as an artist but as a lawyer, executive, activist, consultant, etc. My artistic ability was beneath the surface, and did not emerge until later in life," Leavy explains.
