Local Arists Honored in Congressional Contest

Local area high school students compete in nation-wide art competition

Students from 11 area schools gathered at the Wayne Art Center Monday night for an open reception for participants in the Congressional Art Contest, sponsored by Congressman Pat Meehan of the 7th District of Pennsylvania.

Entry to the competition was open to all high school artists in the district, and the reception contained the best work from the area as decided on by a panel of judges from the art center.  There were seven first place winners in different categories, including painting, graphic arts, and photography.

The award for Best in Show was reserved for Jude Marks, a painter from Upper Darby High School.  Marks will be present at a ceremony in Washington D.C. honoring all of the winners from around the country later in June.  His piece, entitled “Peering Out,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building for the following year.
