Giant's Purchase of Genuardi's Stores Approved by FTC

Giant is the third-largest private sector employer in Pennsylvania, according to a company press release.

The Federal Trade Commission has approved Giant's acquisition of 15 stores, including the one in St. Davids, according to a press release issued by Giant on Friday, June 15.

The press release issued June 15 states that 1,700 former Genuardi’s employees have been offered jobs under the stores' new owners, a number that represents "nearly all who applied for employment with GIANT at the stores GIANT is purchasing."

MaryAnne Crager, public affairs manager at Genuardi's, told Patch on Friday that the company was happy that so many employees had been offered jobs at Giant. The 1,700 figure also includes some members of Genuardi's corporate office.

Giant will hire approximately 900 part-time associates in addition to the 1,700 former Genuardi's employees being retained.

Six hundred employees have already been hired, and another 300 employees are still being sought, Chris Brand, Giant's community relations manager, told Patch on Friday.

"With the addition of these jobs, GIANT Food Stores, the third-largest private sector employer in Pennsylvania, will increase its Pennsylvania workforce by ten percent," the press release states.

In an email earlier this week, Brand told Patch that once Giant's acquisition of the Genuardi's stores was approved by the FTC:

A group of 5 stores will close for approximately one week, during which time our team of associates will be making conversions around the clock. Pharmacies will remain open during the conversion process, and we will work to ensure the least amount of disruption to customers as part of the process. The next week, a different group of stores will be closed and converted, and the week after that, the last group.

We will actively communicate with our customers once we have news about the timing for the conversions.

On Friday, Brand said that Giant will be working with Safeway, Genuardi's parent company, "to begin the store transition process."

"We hope to have dates soon, but that’s hard to predict ... Now that the FTC has cleared the way, we can begin those discussions," Brand said.

As of Friday, the stores to be closed in each phase, and the exact schedule for those closures, have not been announced.
