Ithan Market Marketing to the Masses

The Ithan Market will soon be selling its famous chicken pot pie to the masses.

The Villanova shop has just produced 1,000 lbs. of its chicken pot pie that will be sold in stores all over the region, possibly including Whole Foods in Devon.

Marion Greene, who owns Ithan Market with her husband Jim, created the recipe for her chicken pot pie about 12 years ago, and it has been a favorite of customers ever since. Greene told Radnor Patch that she had never made the dish before and created her recipe becuase they had a lot of leftover rotisserie chicken to use.

The Ithan Market has been in business for 50 years.

To be able to sell their product in other stores, which sell in 2 and 6 lb. packages, the chicken pot pie has to be made in a USDA-approved facility. It has been a complicated process, but the Greenes are excited to bring their dish to the next level. The photo on the packaging was done by The Camera Shop in Bryn Mawr.

Greene said that both families and individuals like the chicken pot pie. It has the fat content that may be expected of the dish, but she said that the sodium content is much lower than other similar products.

The chicken is antibiotic-free, as is the lard, and un-enriched flour, so it is technically "all natural." There is 21 grams of fat, 9 grams of saturated fat, 65 mg of cholesterol, 520 mg of sodium, 42g of carbohydrates, 2 g of fiber, 5g of sugar, 20g of protein.

Percent of daily values - Vitamin A 25%, Vitamin C - 6%, Calcium - 10%, and Iron - 15%.

The Greenes said they may next try to sell their shepherd's pie en masse.

I am a person who eats a healthy meal three times a day and I read the nutrition label and there are alot of "All-natural healthy ingredients in the Ithan Market Chicken Pot Pie. My children ask for them twice weekly. Yummy

Isn't this wonderful. It's hard work to bring an excellent product to this level. I know the sandwiches from here are delicious and fresh, too. Congratulations to Ithan Market!

You may want to check your reporting. You state that there are 520 mg of sodium and 42 g of sodium. I am guessing that the 42 grams is incorrect?

Sorry, the 42g is carbs. I have made the change.

Must taste good...50% of your daily saturated fat in 1 serving....and lard is an ingredient. But it doesn't sound too good for you......just saying.

Ithan Market has been in business since I lived around the corner from it over 50 years ago. So it has been in business a lot longer than 15 years. Perhaps you could do a story on the history of it? I know at one point it catered to many of the wealthy families nearby many of whom had "house accounts" there.

You know, she must have said "50" and I heard "15." I'll make the change. Thanks, Sam

I applaud their dedication to meeting the demand that their chicken pot pie has created. However, I would encourage them to spend the same amount of time building better customer service. Having lived in the area for 7 years, I have been in the market 3 times and have NEVER ONCE been pleasantly greeted by Mr. or Mrs. Greene. I won't bore anyone with details, but lets just say a Dale Carnegie course wouldn't hurt their business!

I must defend the Greenes. I have found them very warm and pleasant. Perhaps it was a busy day or some other problem. None of us are 100% perfect at all times. I am sorry to read such negative comments about two hard working people who have delicious meats, salads, sandwiches etc. I wish them well.

If I was rude to any customer at any time, I truly apologize. We truly try to make every customer feel welcome. Sheila, I would like to make your experience more enjoyable next time. I hope to see you soon, perhaps on a Saturday when we make homemade sticky buns right out of the oven. Sincerely, Marion Greene, Owner, Ithan Market, 610-688-0650

This is my favorite product of the Ithan Market. Although I like their fresh sandwiches, meats, and soups I especially like their Pot Pie! It has a wonderful crust, that literally melts in your mouth! It's delicious! As much as I like the pot pie's crust, I like its velvety sauce. It's filled with crunchy and fresh vegetables. I also like the pure chicken, that is wonderfully tender. I think everyone should give this wonderful Pot pie a chance. Congrations Ithan Market!!

My family and I believe Ithan Market Pot Pies to be the tastiest and most nutritional on the market to date. I give them to my elderly neighbors,I bring them when I visit families instead of a bottle of wine.Everyone loves them. And I must say everyone is always so pleasant at the market. Its so refreshing to have a neighborhood store where you can find so many wonderful homemade dishes.I stop on my way home from work, beside pot pies, many varieties and excellent meat and chicken butchered right there as you wait.We also order our Holiday meals with such helpful assistance from Jim and Marion.

Do you expect people to bow to you, and wait on you hand and foot upon arrival? Good people, and often times very busy

Fantastic news! Couldn't happen to a nicer couple. Marion and Jim follow in the great footsteps of Mary and Joe . . . always great food and pleasant conversation. Their pot pies and sticky buns are phenomenal!
