New Wayne Pizza: Killer Pizza with a Greek Touch

This week Patch reviews New Wayne Pizza in Wayne

The actor/comedian Kevin James has more than a few comedic bits about food and while I wouldn't call myself a big fan of his, I think he's sometimes quite funny. He has one particular bit about how in every box of pizza there is a mutant slice that looks too small to be an actual piece of pizza but looks more like it's a growth attached to the slice next to it. Inevitably an actual piece and the mutant slice next to it will be the last two slices in the box. James has figured out that when someone asks for the larger slice he beats them at their own game by accidentally sliding all the cheese and toppings from the big piece onto the little piece. It was a funny bit because we all recognize that teeny sliver of a slice and the "pizza math" that goes on when we figure out exactly how much pizza everyone has already ingested and how much more each person is alloted.

I was thinking of all of this as I went to . I ordered a small Polynesian pizza, a spinach calzone and a small Greek salad. I appreciate the fact that almost all menu items come in small and large sizes, it makes for better ordering.

The Greek salad was excellent. Extra crisp iceberg lettuce, chunks of juicy tomato, cucumber slices, thin slices of onion, strips of green pepper, black olives, a sliced hard boiled egg, a good amount of feta cheese and a pinch of Greek herbs are what comprised this abundant salad. The balsamic vinaigrette was decent. Slightly sweet and slightly savory, this thicker vinaigrette coated the salad ingredients nicely. The egg yolk was slightly grey around the edges but tasted fine. I enjoyed the roll that came with the salad. It was visually appealing and tasted great.

The spinach calzone is made with ricotta cheese and mozzarella cheese. The filling was brimming with cooked spinach and cheese and the outside had a decent amount of shredded mozzarella sprinkled on top which had transformed into crackly golden cheese. I have never seen this done before and I don't understand why more places don't do it, is there anything better than a crispy, crunchy, nutty piece of cooked cheese? Each bite of the calzone had a nice blend of pillowy soft dough, spinach and both cheeses. My only complaint is that though it's billed as being served with tomato sauce on the side I did not receive any tomato sauce with my order. For me calzones need that sauce on the side.

Onto the main event, the Polynesian pizza was excellent. I had gone for a long run that morning and conveniently skipped breakfast (writing like a mad woman makes me forget to eat). I could smell the pizza as I drove home and it only made me drive that much faster. I opened the box and saw a pizza covered with plenty of cheese, chunks of juicy pineapple and thin pieces of ham with slightly charred tips. Add to this the abundance of the golden cheese crunchies along the edges of the pie, I was in heaven. The dough they use here is really delicious. The crust is flavorful and crunchy on the outside and light and airy on the inside. This was definitely a Greek-style pizza with its thicker and crisper crust. The sauce had flecks of herbs, black pepper and a rich tomato flavor. I ate the entire small ten-inch pie in maybe 5 minutes.

The decor is pretty basic. You're in a pizza shop with no seating area. One wall is covered by refrigerated drink cases. You can see over the high counter into the clean kitchen area to see numerous people working quite hard. There's a lone TV that is always set to something different. When I went in it was the news and they were discussing the failed bipartisan talks addressing the debt ceiling.

The service is excellent. Everyone is unusually friendly. The woman at the counter had never seen me before and made a sincere effort to talk to me about the weather while we waited for my food order to be completed. When she asked me how I was doing I could tell she really wanted to know. Even if the pizza hadn't been so amazing, I would go back just because of how nice she was. Lucky for all of us this place has both great service and great pizza. Check it out, you won't be disappointed, well unless you wind up with the mutant piece of pizza. My pizza though delicious had some mutant slices, good thing I wasn't sharing it with anyone else.
