Ritz Camera Going Out Of Business

The Ardmore store will be one of the stores to close.

Ritz Camera & Image LLC, the 94-year-old Washington D.C.-based camera company, will liquidate its assets and go out of business, the company announced Monday. No timetable has been announced for closure, but the has posted signs indicating that all stock is 20 to 40 percent off.

Ritz, once one of the largest camera special supply stores in the country, has not been able to adapt in the age of digital cameras and online photo sharing.

At a Sept. 6 auction, Ritz failed to find a buyer to keep the chain's remaining stores open. Two liquidation companies—Boston-based Gordon Brothers Retail Partners LLC and Northbrook, Ill.-based Hilco Merchant Resources LLC—were the highest bidders, Bloomberg reports.

Ritz is also the parent company of The Camera Shop and Wolf Camera.

The Ardmore store, located at 149 W Lancaster Ave. in the Ardmore West Shopping Center, is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

I have enjoyed doing business with both Ritz and Borders but they are victims of the changing retail scene. There are not enough people printing pictures anymore (me included) or buying books from a bricks and sticks retailer. Good luck to the Camera Shop in Bryn Mawr.

Time always changes what is normal to the older generations, yet SO foreign to everyone else.'The wheel is turning and you cant slow it down, cant let go and cant hold on... Can't go back and can't stay still, So If the thunder don't get ya then the lightning will' - best wishes to the ritz family. A job well done when it was your turn to shine. You will be missed.

A real shame from a variety of perspectives: the people at Ritz/Ardmore are great (especially Adam, the Manager), their products and services are reasonably priced, the location is great, and their store hours are very accommodating. I've noticed Cardinal Camera is "...accepting all Ritz Camera coupons and club card offers," but if they don't get closer to the Main Line than King of Prussia, that won't matter. I wonder what the REAL closing story is all about! Bob/Ardmore
