Vic & Dean's Pizzeria and Grill: Not Just Pizza

This week food writer Clara Park reviews Vic & Dean's Pizzeria and Grill in Wayne.

V is a warm and welcoming neighborhood spot. I went in for a work meeting there and could tell it was a place that is frequented by regulars. The clientele includes people working in the area, families, students and everyone in between. My favorite thing about Vic & Dean's is the huge colorful hand written chalk menu. You can tell someone lovingly wrote every single item with gorgeous penmanship. It probably took a few hours.

From the artistic menu, we had the personal pan pizza and Caesar salad combo ($5.95) and a personal Hawaiian pizza (ham and pineapple). The pizza crust was golden (great dough), crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. The sauce was bright and delicious. The ham and pineapple weren't abundant but definitely in each bite. This personal pizza was plenty for lunch and I adored the red gingham deli paper, which added a festive touch.

The Caesar salad had parmesan, croutons and even a hard-boiled egg. I get kind of turned off by the grey ring around the yolk which usually means that the eggs weren't peeled quickly enough after being cooked. This version of the famous salad was decent. I prefer when the salad greens and parmesan are tossed together with a bit more dressing before being served but having the dressing on the side is definitely more heart healthy.

Speaking of heart healthy items, Vic & Dean's has "pizalads" which are their signature cold salads on pizza dough. These come in garden, chef, antipasto, Mediterranean, and other  varieties with your choice of dressing. Many are both lactose free as well as chock full of vegetables. It could be a fun choice to order when the weather gets warmer.

The rest of the extensive menu features hoagies, grinders, strombolis, calzones, quesadillas, gyros, pasta dishes, wings, etc., basically anything your heart may desire. Vic & Dean's is indeed so much more than pizza.

There are plenty of beverage choices from sodas (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, etc.) to a dizzying array of flavored iced teas, energy drinks and juices. You'll find whatever you'd like to drink in one of the many refrigerated cases.

The service is friendly and neighborly. Despite the fact that we were there for about three hours, no one ever made us feel like we had overstayed our welcome. There isn't too much seating available but all items can be ordered to go. Stop in for lunch, dinner or an after school snack. The only trouble you may have is deciding what to order.
