Wawa Closing Its First-Ever Store

Wawa's "Store No. 1" opened in Delaware County 50 years ago. A bigger, better store is planned for the area, the company says.

The first-ever Wawa is closing.

The location, at MacDade Boulevard and Swarthmore Avenue in Ridley Township, Delaware County, was the convenience-store chain's first. It opened 50 years ago.

But the store isn't really closing, Wawa says. The company is planning a bigger, better store, about half a mile from the original location, NBC said.

Current employees will be able to transfer to the new location, a Wawa spokeswoman told NBC.

"With the same Wawa associates and customer connections traveling to this new story, for us this will still be store No. 1," Lori Bruce told NBC.

Construction on the new location should begin in spring 2015, The Delaware County Times reported. No timeline was given for closing the first-ever store.

Wawa now has more than 640 locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida, 6ABC said.
