Will the Adelberger Name Remain Along with its Longtime Location?

The name of the floral business that sat on the corner of Conestoga Road and West Wayne Avenue for 125 years may live on.

The name of the floral business that sat on the corner of Conestoga Road and West Wayne Avenue for 125 years may live on.

Adelberger Florist in Wayne was recently purchased by Plaza Flowers, based in Montgomery County, and Plaza may incorporate the Adelberger name, said owner Chris Drummond.

But what about the Wayne location, where the florist was a mainstay for more than a century? The building will soon be renovated by residential builder Cas Holloway, who is also constructing townhomes on the perimeter of the property.

Drummond said they are negotiating with Holloway in hopes to have some retail presence on the corner, although it may not occupy the entire building. In fact, Drummond said, they do not need all of that space because most of the work is done elsewhere.

Adelberger clients can order flowers from Plaza’s Jeffersonville location. They deliver seven days a week and delivery times are faster now, Drummond said, because they have a fleet of delivery vans.

“At first a few people were nervous, but once they saw the bigger selection, faster delivery… I think everyone kind of embraced it,” Drummond said of Adelberger clients.

Until recently, Barry Barnett was owner of Adelberger’s, which he bought from the family. Drummond and Barnett got to know each other through a delivery co-op, he said. Drummond bought the business from Barnett, who continues to work there.

“We already have a lot of Main Line clients,” Drummond said. “It would be fun to have a retail location there.” Plaza Flowers also has a location in Center City.
