Photography Duo Breaks $1000 in Fundraising Project

Photographer Doug Scaggs and writer Lexi Miller-Golub photographed Centralia, PA and its survivors on the 50th anniversary of the town's tragic accident.

Hi everyone!

I am extremely proud to say that the Overshadowed USA project just broke $1000 (in 4 days)! We're on our way to earning the $14,000 that Doug and Lexi will need to travel through 31 states over 45 days, photographing and journaling U.S. wonders you never knew existed.

One such site is an abandoned mining town in Centralia, PA. The town, featured in pop culture flick Silent Hill, underwent a transformational tragic accident fifty years ago. An exposed coal seam caught on fire, leading to the planned destruction of the town in order to prevent the fire's spread. In 2012, that same fire is still burning beneath the rubble and ruptured concrete.

Doug and Lexi took a trip to Centralia to explore this historic tragedy. The duo's photos and write-up are not to be made public yet, but Doug shared three images with us. Note in the first image that smoke is still rising from the hole in the tarred road!

You can help us by pledging your support on Kickstarter.com! If we reach our financial goal, your funds will be withdrawn by Amazon and distributed to Doug for equipment costs and travel expenses. Please pledge to support this phenomenal photo-journalism project!
