Delco Recycling Event Will Accept Items With a Cord

The first electronic recycling event when nearly everything with a power cord will be accepted at a special collection will be held Friday, June 17, by the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority at Delaware County Community College.

The only items with a power cord which won’t be accepted are large appliances and appliances with Freon or mercury or use gasoline.

County Council Vice Chairman Christine Fizzano Cannon announced the “Electronic Friday Recycling Event” will be conducted from 9 AM-1 PM at the college campus on Route 252 in Marple Township.

“While we have collected computers, televisions and cell phones in the past, this event offers a new opportunity for residents of Delaware County since it provides them a method to dispose of small appliances and tools,” Fizzano Cannon said.

“Residents can also bring computers, TVs and cell phones to the collection. The one-day event is a wonderful opportunity to dispose of those items which are appropriate for the collection.”

Items which will be accepted include microwaves, toasters, coffeemakers, electric can openers, hair dryers, curling irons, electric tooth brushes, power tools whether they have cords or are cordless but not if they are powered with gasoline.

The collection is also for computers, peripherals, copiers, printers, monitors, cell and cordless phones, TVs, modems, record players, stereo/tape/CD and DVD players, speakers, electronic typewriters, electronic cash registers, adding machines, dictaphones, paper shredders and computer, cable and power cords.

However, in addition to items which contain Freon, mercury or use gasoline, large appliances that are not acceptable include stoves, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, air conditioners and thermostats.

The event is open to residents of Delaware County as well as to businesses in the county.

However, businesses which wish to participate must register prior to the collection with the Solid Waste Authority, Mrs. Fizzano Cannon said. The authority can be contacted at 610-892-9627.
