New Stop Sign Not Warranted by PennDOT Standards, Report Says

A new stop sign at Midland Ave. and St. Davids Road was recently approved.

The recently approved stop sign for the intersection of Midland Avenue and St. Davids Road in South Wayne did not meet the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation warrants for a new stop sign, according to a police report.

The March, 2011 report done by a Radnor police officer states that the stop sign is not warranted by PennDOT's standards because there was no reported crash history in the previous three years and no sight distance issue.

Still, "there may be intangibles that do not show up in a scientific study which should be considered when making this kind of decision," Radnor Police Superintendent William Colarulo told Radnor Patch. "I personally observed this location and I can see why such measures were taken and I support this decision."

According to Midland Avenue resident Cheryl Tumola, the new stop sign is needed because of the way people drive, but it would not be necessary if "people added two minutes to their schedules to allow for safe driving."

Colarulo said there has been more than one occasion that the township manager Bob Zienkowski "not only personally observed the traffic conditions at this site, but was actually nearly struck due to the lack of a stop sign."

The Board of Commissioners and the manager have the authority to implement traffic calming measures if they feel it is in the best interest of residents, he said.
