Radnor vs. Lower Merion

The game shown in this photograph, date unknown, was played on the field of Radnor High School, now the field behind Sulpizio Gym in downtown Wayne.

On Saturday, the annual Radnor-Lower Merion football game took place at Radnor High School, the 115th meeting of this famous rivalry. The game shown in this photograph, date unknown, was played on the field of Radnor High School, now the field behind Sulpizio Gym in downtown Wayne. These early games drew enormous crowds, sometimes numbering 12,000. The games became so popular that starting in the 1930s it was played at the Villanova Stadium, which could handle the large crowds. Today, games are played at Lower Merion and Radnor's own fields, alternating by year.
