Living One Day a Time

Elizabeth Chance, owner of Bizzy Concierge, and Image Consultant.

Why is it so hard to live in the day? Human beings are constantly reflecting on the past and trying to predict the future. In my secret society meetings we have a prayer with this line, “Yesterday is gone, no money in the world can bring back yesterday”. We keep staring in the rearview mirror in hopes of changing the past. We enlist fortunetellers, mediums and astrologist in hopes that they will tell us our future. Why do we humans have the need to know what is going to happen? Why can’t we just wait and see; let things happen? Is the answer control???

I am guilty of constantly wanting to script my future. Invariably I put my characters in place hoping that they all do as I the powerful puppeteer declare you to perform. For example, my children oh how I would love for them to do what I have dreamed for them to do. But, in the end my children will do what is right for them.

Today is Election Day and I have had numerous phone calls asking me what I think is going to happen. I have no idea what is going to happen. For several months reporters and political pundits have been prognosticating ad nauseum on the outcome. Who is going to win this most important Presidential election? Is it reasonable that if we conduct hundreds of surveys we will predict the winner before the election is even held? Why can’t we wait and see? No one has a crystal ball.

I am forever planning my personal future. For instance, in ten years I will have a huge estate, I will have written a book and I won’t have to worry about anything! Yeah right, like that will ever happen. I have a dear friend that says God is laughing while we are making plans. We have no idea what is going to happen. But, insanely we think we have control! The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

The best example I have of control is we all think we know where we are going but in fact we have no idea what is going to happen. It is as if we are all in the car seat in the back of the car and we have a plastic pretend steering wheel and we think we know where we are going! The joke is on us. No one knows! The only things we know definitely in life are death and taxes. I tell my children all of the time to enjoy the day in hopes that if I start telling them this when they are young they will practice enjoying life!! Stop and smell the roses.

I desperately try and enjoy the moment and try not to go to far into the future and not spend time staring at the past. Yes, you can learn from mistakes made in the past but holding onto things that you regret or are ashamed of are gone! All of those situations that you wish you could go back and change are forever in the past. Now if you are lucky you can look back and yes have regret but yet remain unburdened by hurtful weighty memories. Forgive yourself and today is a new day!!! Conquer the day knowing that you learned from yesterday and try and not make previous mistakes again today.

The future…. it is coming inevitability and yes you can have an idea where you want to go but, until it gets here you can’t really worry about it. You will be faced with easy and hard choices. Remember that you are human and you are trying your best! Know that whatever you decide you can handle the outcome! God never gives us more than we can handle. Live in today, I am sure going to try!
