TRADING THE PLANTS OF PENNSYLVANIA: From Early Pennsylvania Botanists to Today's Issues - A LECTURE AT JENKINS ARBORETUM & GARDENS

Presenter: Timothy A. Block, Ph.D. The John J. Willaman Chair and Director of Botany, Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania

The early European settlers of North America of North America recognized many of the plants they found here as holding both commercial and horticultural potential. Today, we tend to focus on the horticultural value and potential problems of plants brought to North America from Europe and Asia and overlook this historic interest in our native flora.  In this talk we will discuss how our native Pennsylvania flora came to be known to the gardens of Europe and the role played by early Pennsylvania botanists in this process. We will also look at issues surrounding the ongoing worldwide exchange of plant material. many gardeners and farmers in the US struggle with invasive alien weeds from Europe and Asia but we never think about what happens when American plants go abroad.
