Annual Day of Service in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Radnor Schools to Join Together for Annual Day of Service in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jan. 16

Students and families from Ithan, Radnor and Wayne Elementary Schools will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a day of service on Monday, Jan. 16 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Wayne Elementary School, 651 W. Wayne Ave. Radnor Middle School (150 Louella Ave.) will also host service activities from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. All schools are closed for the national holiday but students volunteer their free time to help.

Donations are being sought leading up to the event.

For the elementary schools, items needed are:

  • New toothbrushes for shipment to Cambodia through Caring for Cambodia; 
  • Old towels and blankets for Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals; 
  • New or gently used children’s shoes and boots for Cradles to Crayons; 
  • New or gently used books for Mitchell Elementary School in Philadelphia; 
  • New or gently used Matchbox cars for young patients at St. Christopher’s Hospital.

For RMS, donations are requested according to grade level. Donations will be collected at the school through Friday, Jan. 13.

  • Sixth-grade: new or gently used blankets and towels, new socks, flip flops, and hats, gloves and scarves
  • 7th-grade: pencils and pens, paper and notebooks, glue sticks, and crayons, color pencils and markers
  • 8th-grade: toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss; hairbrushes and combs; soap, deodorant, and hand sanitizer; shampoo and conditioner, and travel-sized toiletry items. 

All of RMS is invited to donate new or gently used toys or clothing. The items will be donated to a variety of charities, including Coatsville women and youth home, South Broad Street Ministries, ConKerr for Cancer, Aid for Friends, Manna on Main, and Hats for Hope, an organization created by a RMS student. Volunteers can sign up for a 10-11 a.m. shift or a 11 a.m.-12 p.m. shift on Jan. 16.

Projects to be held on the day of service at Wayne Elementary School include:

  • Decorating pillowcases for sick children at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; 
  • Assembling snack bags for residents of Wayne and Rosemont Presbyterian Senior Centers; 
  • Making Valentine cards and care packages for U.S. troops overseas;
  • Making hot chocolate packets for the Coatsville VA Medical Center;
  • Participating in a jumping jack contest and candy walk for charity.

A bake sale will also be held in which proceeds will benefit Radnor’s A Better Chance (ABC) House, which identifies and recruits academically talented and motivated students from disadvantaged school districts to live in a group home setting and attend Radnor High School. 

The activities at the elementary schools are sponsored by their Parent-Teacher Organizations.
