UNIQUE ARTISTS' SHOWCASE IN THE HEART OF WAYNE

Wayne, PA -- Rolling meadows of Ardrossan Farm, pristine glacial waters of Alaska, and the spiraling inner heart of a pea pod – these are just a small sampling of the stunningly beautiful images now lining the walls of local investment firm Hotaling Investment Management. The firm, located in the historic Bank building at South Wayne on Lancaster Avenue, is opening its current gallery-type installation of works by local women artists to the public, by appointment only, through June.

One of the showcased artists is Josephine Winsor, a client of Hotaling Investment Management, whose studio is in Newtown Square. Her work may be considered both traditional and avant garde.

“One section of my studio is devoted to landscapes and the other section is for abstracts – the spiritual journey,” says Winsor. “I figure my job now is to blend – recognizing that there’s no difference – between the physicality of life and the spiritual elements or dimensions – they are really all one.”

Winsor’s bent toward the “representational” was discovered when she delved into a spiritual healing sciences course.

“Even though I’d had a brush in my hand since I was three years old, I didn’t get to study art until I was married and met an incredible teacher at the Georgia State University. I went on to study with Neil Welliver at the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, but then took a side-track into energy healing sciences.”

It was the marriage of Winsor’s visual creativity with energy healing that brought her to her current passion.

“I started painting what I would see while learning to tap into the energy of people in a healing way,” explains Winsor. “I began painting different levels of consciousness – and different levels of healing energy. In those paintings my work was well received because it depicted what we were being taught. I stopped my [energy healing] practice – but continued through my art depicting what my spiritual work was about.”

Nancy Alter is another artist whose work is on display. Alter also currently has pieces on exhibit at the Abington Art Center and in the Bryn Mawr Art Ability show. She says she was especially excited about participating in the Hotaling showcase because she appreciates the firm’s particular focus on women investors and realizes how important that can be to others like her, and to the next generation.

“Having spent time as a single parent, and knowing how important it is to plan for your future, I can speak to how important it is - particularly for people in creative fields - and how difficult it can be to make ends meet. Younger women, like my musician daughter, may be struggling,” says Alter.  “I am encouraging her, and others like her, to plan now. In my case I needed to depart from my love of art and work in Insurance for several years in order to be able to go back to painting as a young retiree. At any point in your life if you start planning for your future, it’s never too late.”

Hotaling Investment Management’s idea to feature local women artists builds on the firm’s support of women through its Wealth for Women program. Founder Bruce Hotaling says the program fits a niche for women’s unique investment needs.

“We understand the various financial stages women experience throughout their lives,” explains Hotaling. “Our Wealth for Women program praises these women artists for their success in planning, saving and investing so that they are able to enjoy painting and their retirement. Our job is to help more women, like these talented artists, who are widowed, retiring or divorcing realize their full investment potential.”

Nancy Alter adds, “I was only 58 when I was able to retire and enjoy the money we put away. We have long-term care insurance, we have invested and saved our money wisely, and we consider it a gift to our children that they won’t have to worry about us.”
