Rockin' the Pinewood Derby
In its 60th year, the Pinewood Derby still inspires the imagination, craftsmanship, and competitive spirit among Cub Scouts here on the Main Line -- and across America.
What a treat for me to attend -- and film -- my grandnephew's participation in the 2012 Pinewood Derby. Thomas Ward IV, a Haverford resident and member of Cub Pack 110 (Den 3), joined scores of his fellow Scouts at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church on Saturday morning, March 17th -- St. Patrick's Day.
This was Thomas' fourth annual appearance in the competition, and he acquitted himself well, winning "coolest car" and second place for overall track performance among his Webelos II peers. Fortunately, I was able to capture all the highlights in my brief (5-minute) video, which you can access on YouTube by clicking here.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Pinewood Derby is a piece of Americana, a chance for a boy to start with a block of wood, add a bit of imagination and craftsmanship, and create a memory to last a lifetime.
