Sign(s) of the Time

What better place than our charming Radnor-St. Davids post office for expressions of whimsy via non sequitur signage.

It began as just another spontaneous, out-of-round reaction to one of life's moments, the sort of thing I experience (too) many times a day. But on that particular day, I decided to act on the impulse.

It was the winter of 2009. The Radnor-St. Davids post office had recently been retrofitted with an entrance ramp, and on the January day in question, there was a residue of snow and ice on the incline that added a bit of excitement to its use.

As another customer and I shuffled up the slippery surface, an image popped into my brain that made me laugh out loud. It was a Eureka moment of irresistible opportunity, and the next day I posted a small sign on the support column at the top of the ramp:  ROPE TOW OUT OF SERVICE.

The eclectic patrons of our charming federal facility seemed to respond quite positively, and our postal clerks, Pat and Lee, saw fit to egg me on. As a result, I created a series of signs over the following months that perplexed some but were embraced by most who saw them. This pattern continued until a sad piece of news this spring took the wind out of my sails.

But the Sign Man is back—at least for now—and the latest offering is on display:  BEACH TAGS REQUIRED, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Of course it makes no sense. But for me, at least, therein lies the sophomoric pleasure.

I've uploaded a few examples with this blog entry, and welcome any suggestions.
