Leaf Relief

As one who still hand-rakes most of my leaves each fall, I was quite impressed when the Radnor Township road crew made short work of what had taken me hours to collect.

I really appreciate the deciduous trees that dot my property here in Villanova. Besides being beautiful in their own right, they provide a welcome screen from the hot summer sun -- a real bonus, given the absence of a/c in my home. But with the advent of autumn comes the annual rite of raking and dragging those now colorful leaves either to the adjoining woods or the end of my driveway, where if I've timed it right, Radnor Township personnel will remove them.

The first pick-up on my street was due last week, but for a variety of reasons, I wasn't able even to begin the leaf gathering. Fortunately, the crew didn't make it to Radnor-Chester on schedule, and I used that reprieve to do some serious raking on Saturday.

I was a bit concerned that with a Tuesday forecast that included rain and possibly snow, that mountain of leaves blocking my driveway would become a soggy and impenetrable mess. I called the township Monday morning, and was relieved to discover that a) they were open for business on Veterans Day; and b) the road crew would be coming down my street by mid-afternoon.

And so they did -- and quite effectively, I might add. And because I tend to chronicle all sorts of ordinary occurrences in my life, I grabbed my little Canon point-and-shoot and recorded the event with still photos and a short video, which I posted on YouTube. It runs just under two minutes, and you can watch it by clicking on this link.

There are still many, many leaves remaining to be picked up around the property, including a bunch on my roof, but this was certainly a good start. My goal is to have everything shipshape before my daughter comes home for Thanksgiving. I guess we'll see how that works out.
