Five on the Line - Get Outside

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and explore our local gardens and park. Here are five that you need to visit this summer!

Welcome to Week 3 of Five on the Line

After months of cold, dreary days, summer is always a breath of fresh air. Long days and warm temperatures make you want to go outside and enjoy it while it lasts and, while our weather around here hasn’t been ideal (from a heat wave in May to tornado and flood warnings in June), there are many more weeks of sunny weather ahead.

  1. Radnor Trail – This 2.4 mile long trail is perfect for walking, riding bikes, jogging or tiring out children and/or dogs. Located in Radnor, it has several entrances and parking at the Conestoga Road entrance. The trail formerly served as the Philadelphia and Western Railway. As you walk, be sure and check out the various signs located along the trail that explain its rich history, including sites of formal railroad stations.
  2. Chanticleer – Chanticleer is open from 10 am – 5 pm, Wednesday through Sunday, from early April until November. It is also open Friday evenings until 8:00 pm from May through Labor Day. With 35 acres open to the public to explore, Chanticleer is the ideal place to spend an afternoon, or day, by yourself, with your family or on a date. Located at 786 Church Road in Wayne, this public garden also offers a variety of classes, activities and collaborative programs with local garden communities.
  3. Riverbend – The grounds of Riverbend Environment Education Center, located at 1950 Spring Mill Road, Gladwyne, are open every day to the public from dawn to dusk. With its goal of educating children (and families) on the importance of the environment, Riverbend offers activities and classes throughout the year. Stop by Friday, June 21, 6-8:30 pm, and celebrate Summer Solstice at Riverbend with music, hikes, bee keeping demonstrations, a campfire, yard games and more. It’s the perfect way to start your summer!
  4. Jenkins Arboretum and Gardens, located at 631 Berwyn Baptist Road in Devon, Jenkins Arboretum is open every day throughout the year from 8 am until sunset. They have an education center that is open from 9 am – 4 pm. Bring your camera, your easel, or just your appreciation of nature and enjoy and relax in this peaceful outdoor oasis. Admission is free.
  5. Valley Forge National Historical Park – Located in King of Prussia, this historic park is open daily from 7 am to dusk year-round. Valley Forge was the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army and is the perfect destination for not only history enthusiasts but also nature lovers. It’s a great place to run, hike, bike, walk your leashed-dog, visit the monuments, watch reenactments, or take a guided tour (for a fee). Alcohol is not allowed, but park facilities are free for family parties and reunions.
