Fall Fun on Five on the Line

It’s hard to believe that this is the last week of summer (at least unofficially). Next week, school begins for most kids (if it hasn’t already) and families will be adjusting to their new normal – homework, sports, schedules and routine.

A favorite quote of mine, from that great philosopher Dr. Seuss, seems apropos at this time of year: Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened!

While I love summer, fall has its moments: football games, bonfires, sweaters and leaf piles are just a few things to look forward to over the next few months.

Here are five more things to look forward to this Fall, on this week’s Five on the Line:

1.     Main Line School Night – If all the back-to-school commercials and sales make you nostalgic for classrooms and learning, check out the multitude of classes being offered by Main Line School Night. From Conversational Irish Gaelic to Zumba Toning to a variety of computer classes, MLSN has something for everyone, with locations all across the area. (FYI: This year marks MLSN’s 75th anniversary. If you want to join them in celebrating this milestone, stop by the Creutzburg Center on Saturday, September 21 from 5-8 p.m.)

2.     Radnor/LM football game – This year marks the 117th meeting between these two schools and extends the oldest continuous high school football rivalry in the US, which began in 1897. This year’s game, being played at Radnor, will be on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m. Bragging rights are on the line, so come out and cheer on your favorite local team!

3.     First Friday – First Friday Main Line is celebrated in the communities of Ardmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr, with block parties, music, art and performances at various locations. Check out their website (www.firstfridaymainline.com) for a list of events, and come out Friday, September 6 for the First Fall Friday.

4.     Clover Market – If you find yourself with a free Sunday afternoon and are looking for something to do, check out Clover Market, in Ardmore. With three dates in the fall (9/15, 10/13, 11/3) and a new location in Chestnut Hill (10/27), Clover Market offers a wonderful outing for those who enjoy finding unique, one-of-a-kind items in a festive, outdoor market.

5.   Speaker Series – For those who love the idea of the Philadelphia Speaker Series but don’t like the price, the Main Line area has two speaker series that you will want to check out this fall.  At Wayne Art Center, HomeGrown, Lectures, Learning, Locally, will feature five dates with speakers discussing everything from the economy to the future of healthcare. Check out their website (www.wayneart.org) to find out more and register. And Conversations, the Fifth Annual Fall Speaker series at Tredyffrin Public Library will feature four local authors discussing their books, including Judy Wicks, founder of the White Dog Café and author of Good Morning, Beautiful Business: The Unexpected Journey of an Activist Entrepreneur and Local Economy Pioneer. Go to their website for more information and to register.

This will be the final post in my series Five on the Line. Please continue to follow my blog as I share my thoughts on family and life on the Main Line.
