Five on the Line: Festive, Fun and FREE

For those of you who follow me (I know there is at least one – thanks to my husband), you may have noticed I’m a bit late with my post this week. I usually try and submit my “Five on the Line” on Mondays, but that just didn’t happen this week.

My excuse(s): It’s August; we just got home from the shore after a three-week vacation; preseason started for my daughter and I may or may not have had everything ready for her; my son left today for his final year at college and things needed to be bought, washed, organized and packed; and, it’s August.

I feel that last excuse needs repeating because, well, I am just not a big fan of August. For me, it’s like one long Sunday night. While I understand many are just going on their vacations, ours is over, due to the aforementioned events, and now I feel like my summer is over and school should just start already.

However, August on the Main Line does offer some wonderful opportunities to get out and enjoy the area before the college students come back and families return from the beach. And many are free!

Here’s what I hope to check out this week – for free! Five on the Line:

Find out what's happening in Radnorwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

1.     Yoga – Lululemon has offered a free Yoga class every Wednesday night at Radnor Middle School all summer long. The hour-long class is for all levels and begins at 6:30 p.m. on the field – the perfect way to end your day (and just what you need after packing up and sending your child to college!) Stop by and find your zen before summer ends.

2.     Rock Formations: - These may be a few years old, but I still enjoy searching for the rock formations that popped up in different locations throughout the Main Line a few years ago. For those who don’t know, they were the artwork of retired dentist and Wynnewood resident Ed Basner, who enjoyed giving people something to look at, and hoped that they would inspire people to do something artistic in their own lives.  At one point there were close to two dozen formations up and down Lancaster Ave. Take some time to search for these works of art this week.

3.     Get your errands done – As I mentioned, August is relatively quiet around the Main Line. Many families are still away on vacation and the majority of the college students aren’t back yet, so now is the time to get all those errands done or check out that restaurant or shop you’ve been meaning to try but could never get a parking spot near. Enjoy the quiet before it comes to an end (in about two weeks)!

4.     Guide to the Mainline App – I just downloaded this app from Mainline Media News. It’s free and gives a comprehensive list of events, places and dining options for towns up and down the Main Line.

5.     Preseason – As I mentioned, this week began preseason for my daughter, who plays volleyball.  If you find yourself at home as well, and are looking for something to do outside to enjoy this beautiful weather we are experiencing, be sure and stop by some of the local colleges and high schools and check out the hundreds of students who ended their vacation early to prep for the upcoming football/field hockey/soccer/volleyball/girls tennis season. (Or spend an evening listening to the bands practicing their fight songs and halftime routines.) It’s a great way to support your local schools!
