Spring to Summer...So many things to transition.

Get on top of it when school ends and be ready for summer fun! It;s the little things that can help you keep your cool.

Spring is a wonderful time … the weather warms up, flowers bloom, baseball and lacrosse are in full swing and grilling season is back!  Just as we’re getting into the swing of The Good Life we find ourselves looking at end-of-year parties at school, checking expiration dates on sunscreen (you’re doing that, right?) and finalizing summer vacation plans.  Here are a couple transition items to make sure you don’t let fall through the cracks…

Your Kids - One of the biggest summer transition issues I see with my clients is all of the (crap) treasures that accompany their kids home at the close of school.  A year’s worth of artwork, writing samples, old tests and papers, random school supplies and of course whatever has been re-claimed from the lost and found.  Do yourself a big favor and set a date in the first 2 weeks of summer break that you and your child will go through everything together.  As you decide what to keep and what to pitch, chances are they will “really need” to keep some things that you think should go.  Give them a bin and let them keep it up in their room with the understanding that come August the two of you will circle back to the pile to re-assess what really needs to be kept. (Chances are they’ll be willing to get rid of about 90% of it!).

Your Wardrobe – By now you’ve probably packed up your winter clothes but left a few transitional items in your closet for those chilly spring days.  Those are pretty much behind us.  Take inventory of what is in your closet and drawers and pack up those colors and fabrics which you really are not going to wear in the summer.  A tricky one to keep on your radar – silk.  While you may think “hey, it’s flowy and light – perfect for summer…”  Wrong!  Not only does it reflect dampness easily (ahem, pit stains anyone?) but perspiration actually damages the silk fibers and will never fully come out.

Your Car – Aside from giving it a thorough interior cleaning (good-bye all signs of mud and goose poop from the sports fields!) don’t forget your tires. Bet you weren’t expecting that one.  I’ll never forget one year in college when a friend’s tire suddenly exploded while he was driving.  According to our friends at Edmunds.com:

“Because of summertime's higher temperatures, the air pressure in a warm tire rises. Why? Because air is a gas, and gas expands when it heats up. Keep this in mind if you are checking tire pressures. The given tire pressure specifications are for when the tires are cold, therefore the pressure should be checked when the tires are cold.  Also, an improperly inflated tire can heat excessively, potentially leading to a blow-out on the highway.”

Just what you need, right?

Enjoy the transition … you’ll be on vacation before you know it and you won’t have to worry about any of these things!
