Agnes Irwin Wins Big in Virtual Marketplace, Again

Two Agnes Irwin juniors rank 1st regionally and 8th statewide in Stock Market Game; AIS teams rank 1st in region

ROSEMONT, Pa. – Given a virtual cash account of $100,000 to work with, more than 90 Upper School students at The Agnes Irwin School participated in The Stock Market Game for the second time. Combined, 13 AIS teams placed 1st at the regional level, with juniors Anna Yass of Haverford and Kelly Manning of St. Davids ranking 1st regionally and 8th in Pennsylvania.

The Stock Market Game is a 10-week national online program that simulates the New York Stock Exchange in real time. Students divide themselves into teams and research stocks they want to buy, examine risk and make trades much like an adult would manage his or her portfolio.

“The girls are not just learning about the history or the mechanics of the stock market – although we do learn that as well – but they have more of a personal connection with the game,” said Carole Melvin, controller and financial literacy teacher at Agnes Irwin, explaining that the companies the girls  are investing in are companies and brands they are familiar with like Apple, Facebook and Starbucks.

“The larger lessons that they are learning include teamwork as they agree to put each other at financial risk, a willingness to make decisions and take risks, leadership and competition.”

Yass and Manning are members of the Investment Club at Agnes Irwin – a student-run club created in September 2012 for students interested in learning about the greater economy.
