Why You Might Need Flood Insurance

Flood maps have recently been re-drawn and your property may now need flood insurance.

Being of Dutch descent I totally understand people who don't like water, especially when there is too much of it. Our area weather is pretty steady, but we can have those rain storms that create flooding issues especially if you live in certain parts of the Main Line including Wayne and Strafford where you are close to a creek. If the rain is too heavy it can cause problems. Snow melting can also cause issues.

One of the issues recently is that "Flood Maps" have been redrawn, and many areas that were not in flood zones are now labeled as being in flood zones and now require flood insurance. If you have a mortgage, you most likely will get a notice from your mortgage company informing you that you are now required to obtain and show them proof of your flood insurance. A good site is Floodsmart the official site of the National Flood insurance Program where you can find information about how the new flood maps will impact you, residential and and commercial coverage as well as how to prepare when a possible flood might happen. There are also links to agents and Frequently Asked Questions.

If you don't have a mortgage it is a good idea to check whether you might need coverage, none of us like to find out after the fact that we are under insured or worse yet carry no insurance when we go to make a claim.
