Patch's Best Bets for the Week

Where/When: from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Why Go: Join the Radnor Conservancy and Chef Budd Cohen for an afternoon of learning, tasting, and comparing apples that are locally grown but may not be as well known as the apples we find in the grocery store. After all, there are over 2,000 varieties of apples that come in all sizes, colors and tastes.
Pricing: Adults $5, children free.


Where/When: from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Rock out to local bands with strong ties to the community while supporting the Radnor Educational Foundation. Each band features Radnor parent or student performers. All proceeds benefit the Radnor Educational Foundation’s efforts to work with Radnor teachers, administrators, PTOs and parents in identifying and funding extracurricular enhancements that foster Radnor’s dynamic learning environment.
Pricing: $20 in advance, $25 at the door.


Where/When: from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Participate in the Wayne Art Center's version of the popular TV show "Chopped!"  Kids and teens, you too can be a culinary star when you team up for a cooking battle. Each group will be given a basket of four mystery ingredients and some suggested recipes to prepare in one hour. Then everyone will choose their favorites and a winner. This event is geared toward ages 10 and up.
Pricing: $45.


Where/When: in Newtown Square from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Enjoy a seasonal buffet and kick up your heels with live music from bluegrass band The Gnawgahydes. This fall event is presented by the Newtown Square Historical Society. Nonmembers are welcome. RSVP by October 14.
Pricing: $12 per person, under 12 free.


MEDIEVAL DAYS

Where/When: from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Why Go: See what life was really like during the Middle Ages in Europe from the Vikings to the age of Columbus. See how five hundred years of European culture thrived and changed through the heroic eras of the Romans, Saxons, Normans, and Vikings. Finally witness the changes that technology made by the late Middle Ages by viewing the 15th century War of the Roses and Irish encampments. Also view a 16th Century Polish calvary unit. Food and refreshments may be purchased.
Pricing: Adults $12, children ages 4 to 12 $8.


COLONIAL HARVEST FESTIVAL

Where/When: from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Experience early American life in 17th century Marple. The culture, customs, hardships and the daily work routine will be brought to life by colonial clad volunteers. Learn how to churn butter, make candles, and apple butter. Also, see a working blacksmith shop and enjoy the delicious aroma from the walk-in working fireplace while listening to the music of the Marple Community Band. Plus, stroll the lawn next door at , which is hosting a on the same day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). 
Pricing: Free.


PUMPKIN DAYS

Where/When: from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Why Go: Enjoy fall blooms and gorgeous foliage at the arboretum with a day full of fun activities, yummy food, and of course, pumpkins. Hop on a hay wagon tour, get spooked in the haunted barn, dress up a scarecrow to take home, marvel at a sand sculpture demonstration, wind your way through the corn stalk maze and enjoy plenty of goofy games and make-and-take crafts. Stay for live music, featuring the tunes of Makin’ Music Rockin’ Rhythms, The Jersey Corn Pickers bluegrass band and Lost Northern Tribe zydeco band. Come hungry and sample the delicious fare at the food court and Baked Goods Café. While you’re there, take time to explore the whimsical Magical Habitats exhibit and Tyler’s ever-popular Totally Terrific Treehouses. The event will be held rain or shine.
Pricing: Members: $4 adults, $2 children ages 3-15. Non-members: $10 adults, $7 children ages 3-15. Children under 3 are admitted free.


FALL CARNIVAL

Where/When: Granite Run Mall from 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 3 to 11 p.m. on Friday, from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Why Go: Enjoy cool fall nights at the carnival, including thrilling amusement rides for all ages, delightful games of chance and delicious carnival food. Enjoy family night every night where you can purchase an unlimited rides wristband for one low price per person.
