Celebrated food historian William Woys Weaver visits Radnor Memorial Library

When I take a ride to Lancaster (or visit the farmer's market right around here) I like to splurge and treat myself to a cream-filled whoopie pie. I don't usually give it much thought as to whether it's authentic Pennsylvania Dutch Country food.  It just tastes good. Whoopie!

Many of the sweet treats (and main dishes) we have come to expect from that region did not emerge from Pennsylvania Dutch culture but from the tourist industry and who knows what else. On Tuesday, October 22, 7:00pm at Radnor Library, celebrated food historian and cookbook writer William Woys Weaver will trace the origins of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine as far back as the first German settlements in America and follows them forward as New Dutch Cuisine continues to evolve and respond to contemporary food concerns.

That evening, we will feature the author's new book, As American as Shoofly Pie: The Foodlore and Fakelore of Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine. Weaver's detailed and affectionate chapters (he has a Mennonite background) present a rich and diverse portrait of a living culinary practice.

Radnor Historical Society is the Library's co-sponsor for this author event. We will have books for sale and you can sample some Shoofly Pie, too.

See you at the Library,
Pam
