Plane Evacuated Following Aborted Takeoff

At least one person was injured when the plane's nose gear malfunctioned, officials said.

An airplane malfunction and aborted takeoff Thursday evening led to a plane being evacuated and significant delays at Philadelphia International Airport.

U.S. Airways Flight 1702 had just taken off for Fort Lauderdale when it had what airport officials called a “nose-gear malfunction.”

Airport officials were quick to caution that the incident was not a crash despite multiple reports from passengers and people on the ground calling it just that.

The plane’s emergency slides were deployed and passengers evacuated. At least one person was injured, airport officials said.

There were some media reports that the plane had blown a tire, but airport officials said they were unable to confirm that.

The FAA issued a ground stop while the plane was removed from the runway, which Philadelphia International Airport said led to delays of about 2 hours and 17 minutes. The ground stop lasted about two and a half hours, and some flights were diverted during that time, officials said.

How is that not a crash if the plane had taken off? The story needs a bit of detail - had it left the ground or not? What did passengers experience, what clues did people have that something was amiss, etc.

its a crash but trying to stop a 160knots, 30ton in maybe 10ft? something is gonna break, but faa uses terms like incident unless it bounces off a plane or bldg and until the investigsation is over. alot times they only abort like that when they don't have enough power coming from the engine(s), and if they did they wouldn't be able to climb I agree media really dont know about life experiences, but Im actually glad they didnt jump the gun for once and conclude something before the conclusion.. like most media does , and make themselves look stupid. The pilots wisdom to abort and stop without more damage is to be commended they usually have very good reason, but im sure all the media asshole will scream coverup oh well fuk em. alot times tends to be underpaid and overworked maint crews by cheap coperations I haven t flew in about 10 years and unless im flying my own, I wont be flying pretty simple really and its easy to do.
