Radnor Fire Company Joins Forces for Giveaway

Radnor Fire Company gave away smoke detectors as part of huge regional prevention effort.

Representatives of the Radnor Fire Company joined their counterparts from more than 170 fire departments throughout the Philadelphia region Thursday morning to kick off Operation Save a Life.

The program is a collaberation between 6ABC/WPVI-TV, Kidde and Home Dept to provide working smoke detectors to people who can't afford or are in need of a home smoke detector.

Officials from the Radnor, Berwyn and Paoli Fire companies picked up about 30 of the high-tech smoke detectors for each department to distribute as needed to residents in their coverage areas.

The three fire companies work in close cooperation with each other responding to fires, accidents and medical emergencies from Radnor to Malvern.

6ABC started program 22 years ago with just five fire companies, including the City of Philadelphia's fire department. The 2013 Operation Save-A-Life effort now includes 178 fire companies from Southern New Jersey to Chester County and everywhere in between.

Kidde makes the smoke detectors which require no battery replacements and last up to ten years. During a news conference at the distribution event held at the Philadelphia Fire Academy, Kidde spokeswoman Heather Caldwell announced that the company was increasing the number of devices for this year from 7,200 to 10,200.  Caldwell says the success of the program, which started in Phialdelphia and is now in cities coast to coast, shows the importance of the fire prevention message and "unfortunately it also shows the need."

If you need a smoke detector for your home contact your local fire station for information on who qualifies for the free smoke detectors and how to install one in your home.

Editor's Note: if you haven't checked your smoke detector's batteries, why not do that now while you're thinking about it.
