Radnor Police To Destroy Cache of Weapons

Among the weapons set to be destroyed are six automatic machine guns.

Radnor Police are destroying six automatic machine guns and a number of other weapons in their possession.  The weapons will be melted down at ArcelorMittal in Coatesville.

The six automatic weapons were purchased by the department in 1999 following the Columbine massacre, but have never been used, said Police Superintendent Bill Colarulo.  The Radnor Board of Commissioners ordered the destruction of these six firearms on June 18.

All of the other weapons that are scheduled to be destroyed came either from a robbery, rape, aggravated assault or suicide, with the exception of one firearm, which was turned in by an owner who had purchased it legally.

“Not one of those weapons came into our possession because they were used for the purposes of good or something lawful,” Colarulo said.

Colarulo spoke about the massacre in Sandy Hook, CT, saying  “One unfortunate thing is it takes events like that before people realize the seriousness and the danger of firearms.”

These firearms from Radnor Township are being destroyed rather than being resold so as not to fall into the wrong hands, Colarulo said.

What else can we buy and then destroy... to waste money.

They should be given to one of the United States armed services rather than destroyed. It's one thing for the commissioners to decide the Radnor police should not have automatic firearms, but melting them down seems like a pointless political statement at the taxpayers' expense. Just turn them over to the military.

Grandstanding and promoting their anti gun agenda. So the plan is to call in the County Swat team. What happens when that Swat Team is busy else where in Delco? Do we ask the bad guys to please wait until Swat arrives?

Oh boy. There's nothing worse than ugly, scary-looking guns.

Here we go again, the Commissioners and the Chief grand standing for the cameras. In my opinion they are just exploiting the deaths of murder victims in Connecticut. Guns get melted down all the time. They decided to melt the perfectly good machine guns that were only able to be owned by law enforcement months ago. But now, for a little face time in the paper and news… well you get the point. The residents of Radnor should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this dog and pony show to continue.

The new Radnor Police Chief clearly has his own agenda and loves being in the news. I agree with all the above post!

Maybe they should melt them down and convert them into garden tools for Skunk Hollow. "They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks." Isaiah 2:4

What happens while they wait for swat? The same thing that happened at Columbine while they waited! Military and Police SHOULD have these kind of weapons so they can respond if, God forbid, they had to. So glad my kids are out of this townships' school system. This public statement of this plan is an absolutely ridiculous response to the situation on the part of both the Commissioners and the Police Chief. Grandstanding and Political Correctness indeed!
