Delaware County Celebrates Red Cross Month

The Delaware County Council held a ceremony proclaiming March as Red Cross Month.

The Delaware County Council held a ceremony proclaiming March as Red Cross Month in Delaware County last week. The ceremony honored the efforts of Red Cross staff and volunteers in response to the needs of the Delaware County community.

In 2011, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to 760 disasters, 51 of those disasters were in Delaware County.

There have been 44 disasters in Delaware County requiring response by the Red Cross since the start of 2012.

In response to Hurricane Irene, the Red Cross set up two shelters in Delaware County to house displaced citizens and their pets.

More than 1,200 volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania reside in Delaware County. Volunteers in the county conducted 1,887 youth trainings in youth in HIV prevention, disaster preparedness, First Aid, CPR and International Humanitarian Law. In addition, youth in our area received information on disaster preparedness, community service and service learning projects in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Accompanying Judge Hughes at the ceremony was Drew Alexander, Delaware County DAT Team Captain and team members as well as SEPA board member, Michael Maddren. Delaware County Leadership Council Members Kathleen Breslin, VP Institutional Advancement DCCC, and attorney Tom Musi were also there.
