'Hero Day' to Save Scholarship Fund

The Delaware County Council has declared  June 2 “Hero Day” in honor of an annual scholarship fundraiser for children of emergency responders who have died in the line of duty.

The 35th annual Delaware County High School All-Star Football Game will be played on June 2 at Widener University to help raise money for the Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County, Inc., said councilman Thomas J. McGarrigle at Tuesday’s meeting. 

“The Hero Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for the children of Delaware County police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who died in the line of duty,” McGarrigle said of the fund that started in 1977.

Area businesses and organizations will make donations. Some have already contributed, but those figures are not currently available. 

The game will be at 7:30 p.m., with pre-game festivities starting at 7 p.m., on Thursday, June 2, at Widener University in Chester.

The Delaware County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania Resources Council will offer free educational workshops to help residents to be green, said Vice Chairwoman Christine Fizzano Cannon.

“The workshops, titled ‘We All Live Downstream’ and ‘Bringing Green Energy Home,’ are funded through two grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Education Grants program,” Cannon said.

The “We All Live Downstream” workshops will start on Thursday, May 5, while the “Bringing Green Energy Home” workshops begin on Wednesday, July 13.

Family practice physician Dr. George Avetian was named the new senior medical adviser for Delaware County Council.

Councilman Mario Civera Jr. made the announcement and said that Avetian  has been in family practice since 1983.  Avetian's  office is on Market Street, in the 69thStreet section of Upper Darby. Avetian is also on staff at Delaware County Memorial Hospital.

“I look forward to working with (county and organizations) that promote programs that will have a positive impact on our communities," Avetian told the council.
