Man Fined at Valley Forge Park During the Shutdown

"They shouldn’t restrict people from exercising and trying to stay healthy in a public park," John Bell said.

"John Bell was enjoying quiet miles in Valley Forge National Historical Park on Sunday morning when flashing lights prompted a sprint back to the parking lot. There, two park rangers hit the 56-year-old marathoner with a $100 fine for running in a park closed during the government shutdown," reports Runner's World.

Bell, of Chadds Ford in Chester County, is fighting the citation, the magazine reports.

“After the shock wore off, I thought ‘this isn’t right,’ they shouldn’t restrict people from exercising and trying to stay healthy in a public park,” Bell told Runner's World.

A "walk-in" or peaceful protest seems like a fine idea. But your messaging, "We need to push back against this federal thuggery," strikes me as wacky and wrongheaded. Who is the "thug" in this scenario? The federal police officer doing his job while working without pay? Or perhaps the "thugs" are the "moderate House Republicans" representing our areas that say they don't want a government shutdown (hostage taking, in my opinion) and favor a clean CR, but have not voted on ways to end the shutdown? Talk is cheap, it's the votes that matter. Still, maybe it is best we don't call each other "thugs," yes?

More an opinion than messaging. But speaking of language, one man's "clean" CR is another man's "unrestricted" CR, nothing much different from a blank check in my view. And while my irritation over these shut-downs has several sources, I find Harry Reid's refusal to allow votes on any of the many House bills to reopen government functions really irresponsible. I'm content to leave it there. Have a great day.

Appreciate the update. Any idea where the gathering point will be? I'm wondering if there will be access to parking.

From an email I received: Note to those concerned about the parking situation. If you want to car pool or "shuttle" to the Park...Let's meet up at 1:30 PM in the parking lot next to the Wells Fargo Bank on Rt. 202 at the King of Prussia Mall. WHEN: Sunday October 13, 2013 TIME: Meet up at 2pm to rally, then speakers, then we march! WHERE: Valley Forge Historical Park, right next to the Washington Memorial Chapel on (Route 23) Valley Forge Road. DO NOT PARK IN THE CHAPEL'S PARKING LOT. IT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. Contacts at the mall or the event: Mary Ellen Jones (610) 804-6378; Cathy Craddock (610) 804-3706
