Sequestration: The Impact on Radnor Schools

Would the current school year be affected?

The White House released new reports on Sunday that outline the effects that $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts would have on individual states like Pennsylvania.

Locally, if sequestration happens, there would be no impact for the remainder of the 2012-13 school year. No entitlements would be affected, if at all, until 2013-14, according to the Radnor Township School District.

In December the school board passed a resolution regarding the sequestration that "[urged] Congress and the Administration to amend the Budget Control Act to mitigate the drastic cuts to education that would affect our students and communities, and to protect education as an investment critical to economic stability and American competitiveness."

Reports have suggested that the cuts could be anywhere from 5 to 9 percent for most federal funding. At Radnor, the Title I appropriation for 2012-13 is $269,532. Assuming the 13-14 appropriation would be in the same neighborhood, a 9 percent cut would amount to $24,258, according to the school district.

$1.1 million of district's approximate $83 million budget is federally funded.
