Radnor Summer Reading Camp Builds Off First Year Success at Wayne Elementary School

Wayne Elementary School students sharpened their reading and writing skills by taking advantage of an expanded Title 1 Reading Camp this summer. Last year, the pilot program helped select students who had completed kindergarten and 1st-grade. Fifty percent of the students who attended the program grew a minimum of two reading levels and all students with 90% or better attendance grew at least one reading level.

Due to the success of last year's students, this year's program was also opened to students who just completed 2nd- or 3rd-grade. These children joined their younger peers for three weeks of completing word work and other activities. All students were provided door-to-door transportation and nightly take home books to build an at-home library. Their parents learned some things as well, receiving specially designed training to help them infuse technology into their children's reading lives.

The program was staffed by Radnor Township School District certified reading specialists and instructional aides from Wayne Elementary School. The parent training was provided by district librarians and the technology support staff from the school.

Funding for the program came directly from Title I, a federal grant program.
